Fairview Estates Access – Please take it seriously or face a potential ban!

We have had our fair amount of challenges on this side too, but it looks like we have over come most of them. The intake system is working well and most of the regulars have done their biometrics and are used to the procedures at different gates. The most challenging gate is the mantrap at the top gate. Partly because it is in the middle of nowhere without a guard that can assist with how to operate the gate, partly because it is reliant on solar and batteries to operate, and partly because of the communication in the remote area. However, the major challenge is to get people to follow the correct procedures. Despite the extremely small chance of the power cutting out, the lack of solar, a drained back up battery and someone stuck in the mantrap, all at the same time, we installed an escape button. We put clear instructions that it is for emergencies only however, the only time it’s being used is to speed up the procedure to get multiple people through the gate. This means that there are people in the estate that are not checked in which is a security breach. Fairview is taking this very seriously: first offence is a warning, second offence results in a ban from the estate.

We have put up a sign with 10 easy to follow steps:

  • Mantrap for Cyclists Only, Strictly No Runners
  • Approach mantrap, only 1 person at a time
  • Authenticate: present face to the reader or enter PIN + #
  • Lock released? Do not push or pull the gate until the lock has released
  • Pull the entry gate and enter cage
  • Centre Bicycle; rear wheel clear of entry gate and front wheel clear of exit gate
  • Check if entry gate is locked
  • Exit lock released? Do not push or pull the gate until the lock has released
  • Push exit gate and exit. Are both gates closed? The mantrap is ready for the next person.

Do not present your face or enter PIN until both gates are in a locked position

The procedure for the mantrap at the bottom gate exit is exactly the same. The turnstiles do not seem to give issues or lend themselves to creativity and there are always guards to assist at the Strawberry gate and bottom gate.

The procedure for the turnstile at the Strawberry gate for entry and exit is as follows:

  • Both runners and cyclists use the turnstile however, the bicycles go though the sliding gate next to the turnstile.
  • Place your bike against the wooden fence and the guard will open the sliding door as soon as you are through the turnstile.
  • Approach turnstile, only 1 person at a time
  • Authenticate: present face to the reader or enter  PIN + #
  • Lock released? Do not push or pull the gate until the lock has released
  • Push the rotating gate and walk through without hesitating (there is a time limit)
  • When the lock is engaged, the system is ready for the next person
  • When you are at the other side, cyclists can pull their bike through the small gate

At the bottom gate there is a mantrap for the cyclists and it works as follows (same as top gate):

  • Mantrap for Cyclists Only, Strictly No Runners
  • Approach mantrap, only 1 person at a time
  • Authenticate:  present face to the reader or enter  PIN + #
  • Lock released? Do not push or pull the gate until the lock has released
  • Pull the entry gate and enter cage
  • Centre Bicycle; rear wheel clear of entry gate and front wheel clear of exit gate
  • Check if entry gate is locked
  • Exit lock released? Do not push or pull the gate until the lock has released
  • Push exit gate and exit
  • Are both gates closed? The mantrap is ready for the next person.
  • Do not present your face or enter PIN until both gates are in a locked position

The procedure for the turnstile at the bottom gate is the same as at the Strawberry gate however this is an exit only and used for runners only (cyclists use the mantrap):

  • Only runners use the turnstile and it is exit only
  • Approach turnstile, only 1 person at a time
  • Authenticate: present face to the reader or enter  PIN + #
  • Lock released? Do not push or pull the gate until the lock has released
  • Push the rotating gate and walk though to without hesitating (there is a time limit)

When the lock is engaged, the system is ready for the next person.

I realise it is a long story, but these are Fairview’s rules, and to continue enjoying access, all riders must follow the Fairview access and security procedures. For the people that just read the bottom line: Please follow the Fairview Access procedures, failure to comply will result in a ban from the estate.

Let’s respect our hosts and keep these partnerships strong so we can all continue to ride, refuel, and enjoy the trails we love.
